How to Promote Your Book for FREE

how to promote my books

Have you ever run a Facebook ad, Amazon ad, or BookBub deal, then thought to yourself, “THIS IS IT! I’ve cracked the code, and now, these ads will fund my retirement.”?

Yeah…I didn’t think so.

If you want to know how you can promote your book totally free without throwing your hard earned money at “pay to play” advertising machines, this is a post you literally cannot afford to skip!

Now, before you come through the screen and try to strangle me, let me clarify what I’m talking about.

I’m referring to that based-on-nothing-proven advice constantly given to authors that, if your book isn’t selling, you should just start investing in social media ads, BookBub, and whatever shiny new advertising platform somebody is selling a course about this week.

That’s not the answer, and here’s how I know that’s true.

I’ve worked in this industry for 20 years, and in that time, I’ve talked with thousands of writers through my coaching, speaking, social media, events, emails, workshops, and everything else I’ve done in this industry.

And I keep hearing versions of the same story.

“My book wasn’t selling, so somebody told me to run ads.”

And I’ll ask, “Okay. Did they work?”

And the answer is usually…“No.”

Then, I’ll ask how much they spent, and that’s when things get uncomfortable.

Because I usually hear $500…$1,000…$3,000.

I’ve even talked to authors who’ve spent over ten thousand dollars trying to advertise a book that wasn’t ready to convert a stranger into a buyer in the first place.

And THAT is the problem.

What's In This Post?

Thing #1: "Just Run Ads" Is Terrible Advice!

Here’s the problem with paid advertising, especially for an unknown author.

An advertisement might put something in front of somebody.

But it cannot make them care.

Imagine you’re scrolling through your Facebook feed, and see the same old, same old…

Somebody’s kid started kindergarten.

Your cousin is fighting with somebody about politics again.

There’s a dog video.

There’s a recipe you’re going to save and never make.

And suddenly:

“BUY MY BOOK!”

It’s a post from an author you’ve never heard of let alone interacted with, you’ve never seen the book, and no one has ever recommended it to you.

And now you’re supposed to stop what you’re doing, leave Facebook, go to Amazon, and spend money because an ad told you this book was “unputdownable.”

Are you doing it?

Probably not.

So why do we assume our readers will?

This is especially true now because we’re operating in a world where there’s an enormous trust deficit among consumers.

The 2026 Edelman Trust Barometer research gives us some fascinating numbers.

In its study of nearly 18,000 consumers across 15 countries, 88% said trusting a brand was an important or critical factor in deciding what they buy.

Eighty-eight percent!

Even more interesting, the same survey tells us that, when people decide whom to trust, what unpaid customers, advocates, peers, experts, and communities say carries substantially more weight than what the brand says about itself.

So, when we pay for ads, we’re trying to solve a TRUST problem with an ADVERTISING solution.

That’s just ass backward.

Hear me when I say…more traffic doesn’t fix a book that isn’t converting.

It just means you’re paying to put the problem in front of more people.

Thing #2: Amazon Ads CAN Work (Sometimes)!

Amazon ads and social media ads are fundamentally different.

Think about it like this…

If I’m scrolling Facebook looking at my friend’s vacation pictures, I’m not necessarily looking for a book.

But if I’m on Amazon, and I type: “dark romantic fantasy,” I’ve just told Amazon something incredibly valuable.

I’m shopping for a dark romantic fantasy book.

So, yes, Amazon ads can work because they meet the buyer closer to the cash register.

But just because Amazon gives you an advertising button doesn’t mean you’re READY to push it.

Especially as a debut author because:

  • nobody knows you
  • nobody is searching for you
  • you haven’t proven that your packaging converts
  • you haven’t built an audience yet

There’s no book fairy who’s going to swoop in once you pay for an ad, sprinkle pixie dust on your book listing, and make it an overnight bestseller!

So, if you throw a bunch of money against what you’re currently doing, but what you’re currently doing is already not getting you seen by readers?

Congratulations.

You can now make nothing happen faster and more expensively.

Thing #3: The 90-Day Pre-Launch Growth Plan!

At LEAST 90 days before your book launches, you MUST be finding, learning about, and connecting with those people who are actually most likely to buy it.

Please, don’t tell me “really, everyone will enjoy this book.”

That’s about as useful as saying the target audience for Olive Garden is “people who eat.”

You need to get much more specific and “niche down” and find those readers who are actively searching for, talking about, buyting, and reading books like yours.

In Step 1 of my 8-step coaching framework, I help my coaching clients build something I call the Ideal Reader Avatar (IRA).

“What the F@*# is an IRA?”

Glad you asked.

Let’s say you write dark romantic fantasy.

You’re not looking for just “readers.”

You’re looking for people who already obsess over:

  • Dark romantic fantasy storylines
  • Morally gray characters
  • Enemies-to-lovers tropes
  • Villains who probably need therapy but get a love interest instead.

Those are your people.

And here’s the beautiful thing.

They already exist.

Your job isn’t to CREATE your audience, it’s to FIND them.

Thing #4: Start Stalking (Legally) Your Target Audience!

“Sounds great, Christina, but where do I find these magical unicorns?”

As always… I GOTCHU.

The first place you should start your research is on Amazon.

Search for books in your niche that are recent, successful, and highly ranked, then, sort them by “best sellers.”

Scroll past those with “sponsored” (those are books with paid ads, so you can’t trust the info).

Then, for each of, say…five books, go to the 3-star reviews, and read as many as you can.

The information in those comments are GOLD.

Ignore the sycophantic reviews that say things like, “OMG! This book was so amazing!”

(Thanks, Brenda. Super informative.)

Instead, look for keywords and phrases they write that tell you EXACTLY what they loved specifically about that book.

Something like…

“I loved the morally gray hero and the slow-burn romance, but the worldbuilding took too long and I wanted more tension earlier.”

THERE IT IS!

Your Ideal Reader just told you:

  • What she values.
  • What she expects.
  • What frustrates her.
  • What she wants more of.

And she told you this in the language she uses when talking about X books.

Do that for at least five books and you’ll see patterns start appearing.

Next, go where those readers spend time online.

  • TikTok
  • Instagram
  • Facebook (reader groups)
  • Subtack
  • Discord

Basically, you need to be researching this wherever YOUR Ideal Readers hang out most.

While reading through all this incredibly valuable info, think like an anthropologist.

What are they posting?

What tropes are they obsessed with?

What books won’t they shut up about?

What characters are they arguing about?

What terminology do they use?

What makes them comment?

What makes them tag their friends?

Most important of all…what makes them say, “THIS IS SO ME.”

That is market research, and guess how much that costs?

You guessed it.

Nothing.

“Cool, Christina, but what do I do with this information?”

What a pithy and perfect question.

Thing #5: Give Your Readers What They Want!

Once you understand your IRA, you’ve got to spend at least 90 days before launch building relationships with them.

And this is where most authors mess up BIG TIME on social media.

We were taught (and still are) to use social media like a billboard.

“Here’s my book!”

“Here’s my cover!”

“Here’s another quote!”

“Here’s me writing!”

“Here’s my word count!”

“Here’s my coffee!”

“Here’s my laptop!”

“Here’s another reminder that my book comes out April 2027!”

And your reader is sitting there thinking, “Okay…cool…?”

Here’s the thing, and it might sting a little at first, but stick with me before you throw your phone or computer out the window in anger.

Readers don’t care about you, your book, your journey, or your struggles.

They don’t care that you wrote 2,000 words today.

They don’t care that Chapter Seven almost killed you.

They don’t care that you’ve dreamed about being an author since third grade.

NOT YET, ANYWAY!

They don’t know you yet, but you can change that, and it’s your job to do so.

You do this by creating content for THEM instead of constantly creating content about YOU.

  • content they already interact with
  • content that starts conversations
  • content that makes them feel seen, heard, and understood
  • their favorite tropes.
  • their reading habits.
  • unpopular book opinions.
  • their unhinged Kindle addiction
  • the fictional man they’re emotionally involved with

Whatever makes YOUR Ideal Reader Avatar stop scrolling, smile, and say, “That’s my kinda person!”

Create and post content they’re actually looking for, and do it for at least 90 days BEFORE your live launch day.

And if you do that, I promise you…something magical will happen.

Your IRA will show up (by the hundreds and even by the thousands) during the critical first seven days of launch, and they WILL buy your book.

Not because you begged them to, guilted them into it, or pimped your book like some tweaky used car salesman.

Thing #6: Build Hype, Momentum, and Buzz Around Your Launch!

This is where all that work starts paying off.

Those people show up, they preorder, they buy during your first 7 days of launch (super important), they share, they post pictures.

They will even create their own content that tell OTHER readers, “This is exactly the kind of book we love most!”

And THAT is far more powerful and effective than having the word “SPONSORED” typed in grey font under your book’s listing thumbnail.

Amazon’s algorithm is one of the biggest, most complex, and smartest algorithms in the world.

But we don’t need Amazon’s secret recipe to understand the fundamental principle.

Amazon owns 86% of the entire worldwide book sales market, and they want to sell products (including books) people actually want to buy.

And it’s your job to show The Zon’s beast of an algorithm that:

  • You know your book’s genre, subgenre, niche, and category;
  • You know your niche’s target audience and what they want;
  • Your book is one that consumers (readers) are looking for and will buy;
  • Your book has the potential to succeed and make (them) money.

And if you remember nothing from this blog, remember this!

ALL THIS MUST BEGIN AT LEAST 90 DAYS BEFORE LAUNCH!

Writing your book, then publishing it, THEN trying to sell it does not work.

It never has and it never will.

Thing #7: Cannot Skip Steps To Book Promo Success!

If I had to mash all this info (I know…long post) into just one formula, here’s what I would tell you.

Writing your best possible book is critical to your success, but that alone will never be enough to help you achieve your goal as a writer.

Instead, focus on doing these things (in this order):

  • Hire a professional editor (CLICK HERE for a free sample edit by me!.
  • Have a pro service design your cover.
  • Come up with the right title (not a “good” title).
  • Write a kickass, compelling, proper blurb.
  • Find and identify your IRA.
  • Create a 90-day pre-launch fanbase growth plan.
  • Research your IRA and learn all you can about them.
  • Post content on social media that is valuable to your IRA.
  • Create a full and effective email marketing funnel.
  • Send weekly reader-facing emails to your subscriber list.
  • Place your book on pre-order 30 days pre-launch.
  • Build hype and buzz in pre-launch with raffles, contests, and events.

Do ALL that without skipping a single step for 90 days before you publish, and I promise you…

your first (or next) book WILL find its people (not the other way around), and they WILL show up and show out for you!

Because by following everything I’ve just taught you, you’re now going to be launching to real-ass people.

People who already buy books like those you write, read them, obsess over them, post about them, rave about them, and invaluably, tell their friends about them!

Then, finally, once you’ve established yourself in your niche as an up-and-coming author NOT to be ignored, we can visit the issue of Amazon ads done strategically at the right time, the right way.

Because then, you’ll be pouring gasoline on an already existing flame and turning it into a bonfire.

And what you’re not doing is pouring gas on wet sticks, staring at the pile blankly, and wondering, “Why isn’t this working?!”
